I’m Rik Catlow aka rikcat a UX Manager by day and artist and Illustrator by night. Notable freelance illustration clients include, Element Brands, Burton Snowboards, Scholastic Books, 20th Century Fox (Family Guy), and the Grammy award winning band The Mavericks. I’ve also shown at numerous galleries and had a piece that toured a number of museums as a part of a collection.
I grew up in New Jersey just outside of NYC, lived in Charlotte for 9 years and currently live in beautiful Austin, TX. I worked in NYC in my early career and it had a huge influence on me. It was inspiring to see artists doing hours worth of work on the street only to see it covered up or altered by other artist. This taught me to be less precious about what I make and that continuous creation is something to strive for.
I’ve been drawing since I can remember and I’m influenced by mid-century illustration and design, cartoons of the 30s, 40s and 50s. old magazines, advertising mascots, street art, skate and tiki culture. Some of my favorite illustrators and designers are Jim Flora, Gary Baseman, Gary Taxali, Morning Breath, Arron Draplin and House Industries.
Music is a huge part of my life and I’m old enough to have seen Nirvana live in concert…yikes! Some of my favorite bands are Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Sleater-Kinney, Pavement, The Kills, The Cure, and Beach House. Recently I have been into Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy, Surf Curse, and Horsegirl.
I’m nothing without my amazing wife Wassa and my daughter Becca. We have two cats, Cosmo who is an affectionate black cat and a spunky orange tabby named Cheeto.
